Ken Bean is a recipient of The National Medal of Technology, an honor granted by the President of the United States to American inventors and innovators who have made significant contributions to the development of new and important technology.
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI), awarded to America’s most elegant, is the highest honor for technological achievements, bestowed by our president on America’s leading innovators.
This medal shares its honor with an individual or a team, including organizations and their subdivisions for contribution to the country’s economy, environment, or society. The sole purpose of this medal is to award recognition and bring light to the individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s competitiveness, standard of living, and quality of life through technological innovation.
The dignitary honor of this national medal is meant to signify inspiration for future generations to pursue careers in the field of technology to help America maintain its forefront in global technology and economic leadership.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was founded in 1980 by the United States Congress under the Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act. It was a bipartisan effort to foster technological innovation and the technological competitiveness of the United States in the international arena.

The selection process for NMTI

Nominations for 2020 are now closed. Nominations for 2021 will open in January.

From 2019, nominations are eligible for up to 36 months.

Nominations of candidates from underrepresented groups are encouraged for the honor.

Structure
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation Nomination Evaluation Committee consists of a distinguished, independent committee, appointed by the secretary of commerce. It is their responsibility to review and evaluate the merit of all candidates nominated through a competitive solicitation process. The committee makes its recommendations for potential medal candidates to the secretary of commerce. All nominees confirmed through the merit review process will be subject to FBI security check.
